Brisbane

Brisbane, Brissy, Bris-Vegas, the River City... Whatever you want to call it, there's no denying that Brisbane, voted Australia's hippest city by Lonely Planet in January 2014, has something for everyone.

Perhaps you have a penchant for a nice curry, a desire to tick climbing a state monument off your bucket list (what harbour bridge?), or simply enjoy discovering a new place. In the next few pages you will hopefully find enough information to make this weekend at PyCon Australia as alluring outside as in the lecture theatre.

Brisbane is home to 2 million people and is the third most populous city in Australia.

It forms part of Australia’s fastest growing metropolitan region - South-East Queensland – with the population expected to double to almost 4 million by 2056.

Brisbane is the third largest capital city by geographic area in the world, occupying some 1,140km².

It is rapidly emerging as a diverse and energised global city with a $114 billion economy.

Brisbane enjoys a subtropical climate with warm to hot and humid summers averaging 28 degrees and dry and moderately warm winters averaging 23 degrees.

Brisbane residents are young and skilled, highly educated and culturally-diverse (we may be a bit biased on that one).

The largest age demographic is the 24 to 40 year old age group, representing skilled workers.

Brisbane enjoys a large and diverse multicultural community, with Fortitude Valley's Chinatown boasting a number of great restaurants.

Nearly 30 per cent of Brisbane’s population is born overseas.

More than 16 per cent of households speak a language other than English at home.

Cantonese, Italian, Mandarin, Samoan and Vietnamese are some of the most commonly spoken languages in Brisbane homes.

Brisbane boasts a world-class international airport managing more than 3,300 flights per week and in excess of 19.7 million passengers per year.

The Port of Brisbane is one of Australia’s fastest-growing container ports and Queensland’s largest general cargo port.

Brisbane is built on a strong foundation of infrastructure with a comprehensive road and rail network and a fully-integrated public transport and ticketing system.

PyCon Australia 2015 Location

Our venue for 2015 is the Pullman Brisbane – King George Square, the largest combined hotel and conference centre located smack bang in the middle of the city.

The Pullman is directly opposite central bus stations, very close to rail and nearby to citycat catamaran.

There's plenty of coffee, food and drink available within the hotel and in the Queen Street Mall, just a block away.
